Teaching

Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket

It has been so much fun for me to teach classes at Knit Happens in Scottsdale, AZ. I have met some lovely ladies and I hope I have helped them expand their knitting skills.

At the end of February, I began working Tuesday nights at the store. This involves some shelf organizing and moving yarn around, but mostly I help customers find yarn or work through a pattern. This is also teaching. There is so much to know and learn about knitting. None of us will ever learn everything about knitting and therefore there will always be something new to try.

Beginning knitters are full of energy and excitement to start that spectacular sweater they saw in the latest Vogue Knitting magazine. Or they want to plunge into expensive yarn purchases because the colors are so fantastic and the yarn feels so soft. One of the things I love about Knit Happens is that the employees don’t try to sell you something you don’t need or shouldn’t buy yet. They take the time to explain to new knitters how to purchase what they need to make them happy but to stay realistic in what they can accomplish. So many people do not understand gauge, fiber choices, fiber weights, needle sizing, yarn substitution, fixing mistakes without ripping – there’s so much to know. Knit Happens has beginning and intermediate classes to teach techniques and during the summer, we will have a fiber class to explain what’s in the store and how to make knowledgeable purchases. It’s all so much fun…sharing knowledge and seeing how happy people are when they learn something new. Our knitters gain so much joy from moving two needles together and twisting long strands of yarn into something useful and beautiful. It’s always a pleasure for me to be part of my students’ and customers’ knitting experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to be meeting so many wonderful people and sharing the pure pleasure of knitting.
